Dr. Julie Swain of the University of Kentucky College of Medicine says it takes four years of medical school, five years of general surgery and two to three years of thoracic surgery to pursue a career in the profession.

All states license physicians. Licensing requires graduation from an accredited medical school, passing a licensing examination and completing up to seven years of graduate medical education.

Those graduating from foreign medical schools may be licensed after they pass an exam and complete a residency in the U.S.
