Real-Life Communication -- Solution

Here's what you could say to your patient:

"We're going to do an exercise that will help you calm down. It will also give you a way of relaxing whenever you feel stress.

"Breathe in for a count of four, hold for the count of eight and breathe out at a count of eight. OK, good. Now tell me about a place that you've visited in your life, or an imaginary place where you feel particularly good or safe. Imagine yourself in that place.

"In your safe place, what do you look like? What do you see there (color, shapes)? What do you see around you? What is the temperature? What are you hearing? What time is it? Are there any animals? What are you eating? What are you feeling in terms of touch?

"Whenever you feel upset or anxious, just close your eyes and imagine yourself back in that place. If you keep that image in mind, you will gradually learn to relax."
