Real-Life Communication

Millwrights work in mills, factories and plants, which tend to be loud. Instead of communicating with words, millwrights need to communicate with hand signals.

"Miscommunication between partners can sometimes lead to accidents," says millwright Rita Moore. As such, it is important for you, as a new millwright, to learn all the hand signals.

Before you begin your next job in a chocolate factory, your journeyman asks you to memorize and draw the most important hand signals for hoisting operations.

To load up: You use only one hand for this signal. Your index finger points in the air and circles clockwise. See if you can draw this picture.

To load down: This signal uses only one hand as well. Load down is similar to the load up signal, only your index finger points toward the ground as it circles clockwise. See if you can draw this picture.

If you want your partner to load up or down slowly, you must use your left hand. For load up slowly, your left hand is held palm down, forming a ceiling to your index finger. For load down slowly, your left palm faces up and your index finger points downward. See if you can draw these hand signals as well.
