Real-Life Math -- Solution

First you have to figure out the volume of the rock.

Volume = height x width x length
Volume = 9 feet x 9 feet x 8 feet
Volume = 648 cubic feet

You know that each cubic foot weighs approximately 1/12 of a ton. So your total volume x 1/12 equals the estimated total tonnage.

Estimated total tonnage = total volume x 1/12 tons per cubic feet
Estimated total tonnage = 648 cubic feet x 1/12 tons per cubic feet
Estimated total tonnage = 54 tons

You estimate that it would produce 54 tons of broken muck.
