Real-Life Communication -- Solution

Here's what your memo could say:

To: Project Director
From: Telecommunications Technician
Re: Status Report

I am writing to provide you with an update on the status of the installation of a telecommunications line at your company.

As of this writing, the project is at the halfway point. Two major tests conducted recently show the system to be mainly in good working order at this time.

A loopback and transmission test revealed that moisture was affecting some of the lines. The test, in which voice data is sent through the lines and back again, forced us to change the strength of the signal.

However, now that the moisture problem is completed, the signal strength can again be reduced to standard levels.

In short, the project is on schedule. I will continue to keep you updated on our progress.

Get ready to communicate if you want to be a tech. You're not only dealing with equipment, but people as well.

Donna Best says communications skills are very important in her line of work. You must have good presentation, letter writing and public speaking skills when you deal with customers, she says.

Good communication skills also project confidence, she says. "When you are meeting with customers to design their system, you have to present yourself in a professional manner so that [they] are comfortable that what they tell you is going to get done."
