A patient of yours is an 82-year-old man. He is having problems with heartburn -- he unintentionally burps a lot. You're prescribing a drug to prevent that.

The drug you're prescribing is called Metoclopramide. It is used to empty the stomach as well as to relieve nausea. Like many drugs, it is prescribed based on the body weight of the patient.

  1. Your patient weighs 55 kg, and the dosage is 0.5 mg per kg of body weight. What is the total daily dose?
  2. Metoclopramide can be taken either 2 or 3 times daily. The drug comes in 5- and 10-mg caplets. If you can't break a caplet, what is the maximum dosage you can prescribe? Keep in mind the patient must have 2 or 3 doses a day, but they don't need to be the same size. You want to get as close as possible to the total daily dose without going over.
