Camp Director

Real-Life Activities

Real-Life Math

When you were a kid in school, you loved basketball. You played on several teams and Michael Jordan was your favorite player. Now, you're a camp director at a basketball camp. You still find time to shoot some hoops, but you also have other responsibilities like preparing budgets. You need to find out your expenses for a 5-day camp attended by 240 kids.

There are several calculations you must perform before adding everything up into a grand total:

Part A

A sizeable chunk of your budget often goes to facility rental. Luckily, you were cut a break because your basketball camp is associated with a university. They're letting you rent some of their gyms for 25 percent of what they normally charge. If their regular rate is $3,000 per day, how much will it cost to rent the gyms for 5 days?

Part B

Another major expenditure is staff wages. There's an instructor to camper ratio of 8:1. If there are 240 kids attending camp and each instructor receives $400 for 5 days of work, how much will you end up paying the instructors?

Part C

There are many miscellaneous expenses to record. It's important that you don't forget any of these because they can really add up:

  1. Clothing, including staff uniforms and 1 T-shirt for each camper -- $2,300
  2. Trophies and certificates for awards ceremony -- $400
  3. Advertising and promotion -- $4,000

Now that you have all your expenses in order, add up the subtotals to figure out the total cost.
