Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You let the student into your university.

This is the real-life decision Sandy Ho, university admissions officer, would make in this situation. "I had to make this decision last week," she says.

"I had to make many phone calls and e-mail messages back and forth from Taiwan to check out the university," she says. "It turned out that she was coming from a highly regarded university in Taiwan, and that she graduated number six out of 1,000 students. That demonstrated for me that she was at a level we require."

Nonetheless, Ho says the decision was still difficult. "You can't give that kind of time to everyone and you have to decide which cases merit exploration," she says. "It isn't fair to other students to take up too much time helping one student."
