"When you are dealing with difficult situations, you always have to keep the other applicants in mind. Are you being fair to everyone? Fairness is key," says Ho.

Another admissions officer looks over your shoulder. "Why aren't you looking at this application?" she asks. "Don't you know that this Taiwanese university is very well regarded?"

"You have to look at each application carefully. If it requires a bit of research, you've got to be willing to put in the effort for the student," says Ho.
