Real-Life Decision Making

You are teaching private ski lessons to a 12-year-old boy. He's doing pretty well, even though this is only his second time on skis.

After a few basic pointers and a practice run down the bunny hill, your young student thinks he is ready to take on the mountain. He wants you to take him up to an advanced run!

You can't believe it. You tell him he is doing well, but he is not ready for an advanced run yet. He is angry and hurt by your refusal. He threatens that if you don't take him on an advanced run, he will go by himself after the lesson is finished.

It's a tough situation. On the one hand, if you take him up the advanced run, he won't be able to handle it and he may hurt himself. Either way, his confidence will be damaged. You know that even experienced skiers have broken bones going down some of the mountain's advanced runs.

On the other hand, if you don't take him up, he'll go by himself. He could get hurt and you won't be there to help him when it happens.

What are you going to do?
