Real-Life Math -- Solution

You are doing a unit on birds in your elementary school classroom. You have devised a couple of math questions about birds. But to be able to explain how to get the answer, you must know how to solve the problem yourself. These are your answers:

  1. An ostrich egg weighs about 3 pounds. It would take 200 hummingbird eggs to weigh 1 ounce. How many hummingbird eggs would it take to weigh as much as 1 ostrich egg?

    Ostrich egg = 3 pounds
    1 pound = 16 ounces

Ostrich egg = 3 pounds x 16 ounces per pound
    Ostrich egg = 48 ounces

    200 hummingbird eggs = 1 ounce
So how many hummingbird eggs would it take to weigh 48 oz?

Hummingbird eggs = 200 eggs per ounce x 48 ounces
    Hummingbird eggs = 9,600

It would take 9,600 hummingbird eggs to equal the weight of 1 ostrich egg.

  2. Sparrow eggs hatch in about 12 days. It takes 5 times as long for penguin eggs to hatch. Chicken eggs take 39 days less than penguin eggs. How much time does it take for penguin eggs and chicken eggs to hatch?

    Penguin eggs = 12 days x 5
    Penguin eggs = 60 days

It takes penguin eggs 60 days to hatch.

    Chicken eggs = 60 days - 39 days
    Chicken eggs = 21 days

Chicken eggs hatch in 21 days.
