Dear Faith: How and when in college do I choose a major?

Faith says: Choosing a major or area study is important. Some students choose a major based on subjects where they excel or do well in. Also, exploring your personal interests, such as environmental causes, can also help you discover a best-fit major.

Typically, it's your sophomore or junior year of college when you must declare a major and begin taking specific courses in a subject area. If you are interested in a major that requires a lot of classes, or classes that are limited to students in that major, then it is better to declare early.

A major can prepare you for a specific career path, but it can't guarantee you future success and it doesn't have to lock you into a single career the rest of your life. Many people are enjoying a career that has nothing to do with what they studied in college.
