Introduction

Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Career Cluster Video

Planning, managing and providing scientific research and professional and technical services (such as physical science, social science, engineering), including laboratory and testing services, and research and development services.

Employment Outlook

Careers in this cluster fall into the life, physical, and social science; architecture and engineering; and math occupational groups used by the Bureau of Labor Statistics for occupational projections.

Life, Physical, and Social Science

Employment in life, physical, and social science occupations is projected to grow 8 percent from 2020 to 2030, about as fast as the average for all occupations, and will result in about 113,800 new jobs. Increasing demand for expertise in the sciences, particularly in occupations involved in biomedical research, psychology, and environmental protection, is projected to result in employment growth.

Architecture and Engineering

Employment in architecture and engineering occupations is projected to grow 6 percent from 2020 to 2030, about as fast as the average for all occupations. About 146,000 new jobs are projected to be added. Most of the projected job growth in this group is in the engineer occupations, as their services will be in demand in various areas such as rebuilding of infrastructure, renewable energy, oil and gas extraction, and robotics.

Math

Employment in math occupations is projected to grow 28 percent from 2020 to 2030, much faster than the average for all occupations, and will add about 67,200 jobs. Growth is anticipated as businesses and government agencies continue to emphasize the use of big data, which math occupations analyze.
