Additional Information

Getting into the field isn't easy. The work is a calling, but one that often requires special skill.

The best preparation for the job is a lot of involvement in church functions, both academic and social.

Gerry Dargatz, a district missions consultant, says there are different ways you can reach the field. "One is career missionary, and obviously if you're a career missionary you're going to have some kind of religious background in your seminary degree."

People who desire to be missionaries should get some good theological training before they apply for work.

"Definitely the consensus in the fellowship of professionals is that they have a good solid religious background. They've been active in their churches. They know somewhat a good base of the Bible," says Dargatz. "There is a screening process for that."

The church is a good place to get information about becoming a missionary.
