Real-Life Communication -- Solution

You are a carpet installer who will soon be installing Turkish carpets. Your boss handed out pamphlets so everyone at the company will know about these carpets. These are answers to questions you asked:

  1. What factors affect the quality of wool?

The climate, the breed of sheep and the time of year of the shearing all affect the quality of the wool. Generally, wool from sheep in warm regions is dry and brittle, while wool from sheep in colder areas is smooth and full.

  2. Why is wool from colder regions better?

Sheep living in cold regions grow plenty of fleece to keep warm. Their bodies also store fat, which means the wool has a lot of lanolin. That makes the wool feel smooth and springy. Wool from warmer regions tends to be dry and brittle.

  3. What's the problem with wool that has been industrially spun?

The spinning machines often break the fibers. You can stick the broken bits back together with oils, but the fiber is weaker. That means the rugs won't last as long.

"What you need to read and write depends on the type of carpet that you install," says Samir Hajhassan, a carpet installer. "You must follow a procedure for each type, and you have to be able to read about the quantity and type of work that is needed."
