Real-Life Decision Making

It's up to you to decide whether a plane is fit to fly. This can often be a tough decision to make -- passengers are waiting, mail must be delivered and rescue missions require immediate response. But it always comes back to you. Is this plane safe to fly?

This afternoon you're working with other technicians at a large helicopter company. You're in charge of the shift.

It's been a frustrating day. You'll soon have 12 helicopters coming into the shop to be inspected this afternoon. There are enough technicians to do the job, but there isn't an engineer present to certify the work.

You wait for the helicopters to return from their morning flight so that they can be inspected. They arrive and during the pilots' lunch break you look over the helicopters. Three of them have defects that your crew should be able to fix, but they aren't certified to do so.

You're in charge of the situation. You might have to ground three helicopters that have the potential of earning $4,000 per hour simply because of under-staffing. What are you going to do? Are you going to ground the three helicopters or get your crew to fix the helicopters even though they aren't certified?
