Additional Information

Associate professor Allen Maxwell says there are definitely some things a young student can do to begin training for a career. "Foreign languages -- the more the merrier." Students should also learn about statistics and computers, both very important tools in the field.

Professor Michael Dean Murphy echoes this advice. "And definitely do everything to sophisticate your ability to write. Half of all cultural anthropologists wind up in a university and -- at the very least -- you have to write reports for the government."

Do a lot of reading. Anthropologists spend far more time in the library than they do in the field. The reality is that you go and do your fieldwork and then spend years writing about it. You're not exactly Indiana Jones.
