Real-Life Math

Locomotive engineers deal with technical mathematics problems all day long. Your task is to prepare a braking chart for the driver of a freight train. You need to figure out the train's stopping distance, and then tell the driver how much air pressure he needs to build up in order to stop the train safely.

Stopping Distance

It takes 16 feet of stopping distance for every mile per hour of speed being traveled. If the train is traveling at 48 miles per hour, how many feet of stopping distance does the driver need?

Air Pressure

Once you figure out the stopping distance, you can tackle the air pressure question. If the brakes need 4.5 pounds of air pressure for every 8 feet of stopping distance, how many pounds of pressure should the driver apply to the brakes?
