Additional Information

Some road managers recommend taking college courses in business management or music management. But most road managers start out in bands and eventually learn the road manager trade through on-the-job exposure.

"You should look for the schools that teach everything from management of the business to publishing to recording," says road manager Gary Scrutton. "But I'm not sure if any teach road managing and I've never heard of anyone walking out of school into the industry. But if you were to go out on the road handcuffed to me, you'd sure learn a lot."

"It's not anything that you can train for or go to school for," says road manager Julia Rose. "It just takes a thick skin -- especially if you are a woman -- loads of stamina, the ability to be perceptive, think on your feet and multi-task."
