Real-Life Math

The sun is just rising over the hills but as a chauffeur, you are already on the road. You head out to the airport to pick up a couple of CEOs and take them to a morning meeting.

After you drop them off, you pick up a regular client who likes to be driven around town to shop at boutiques and be taken to lunch at a four-star restaurant. In the afternoon, you take this same client for a drive in the country. In the evening, you pick up the CEOs from their meeting and take them back to the airport.

Back at the limousine service center, you total up your day's invoice. "We use math to calculate our daily reports and maintenance reports," says Doug Lemoine, a chauffeur. "We have to calculate things like gross revenue, net revenue, drivers' wages and add-on taxes."

  1. For the 4 trips you made during the day, you charged $35, $60, $100 and $40. What is the tax (at 7 percent) on this total?
  2. If you earned $12 per hour for driving 8 hours, how much did you earn?
  3. You traveled a total of 140 miles during the day. The car gets 35 miles to the gallon. When you topped up the gas tank, how much did you put in?
