Real-Life Math -- Solution

You are a chauffeur, and at the end of the day you need to add up your invoice. This is what you calculate:

  1. For the 4 trips you made during the day, you charged $35, $60, $100, and $40. What is the tax (at 7 percent) on this total?

    Total charges:

    35 + 60 + 100 + 40 = $235

    Tax:

    7 percent = 0.07
    $235 x 0.07 = $16.45

    The total tax on $235 was $16.45.

  2. If you earned $12 per hour for driving 8 hours, what was your wage?

    $12 x 8 = $96

    You earned $96.

  3. You traveled a total of 140 miles during the day. The car gets 35 miles to the gallon. When you topped up the gas tank, how much did you put in?

    Gas cost:

    Use ratios:

    1 gallon: 35 miles
    x gallons: 140 miles

    (1 gallon)(140 miles) = (x gallons)(35 miles)

    140 = 35x
    x = 140 / 35
    x = 4 gallons

    You topped the car up with 4 gallons of gas.

"We use math throughout the day to total up different expenses and costs," says Doug Lemoine.

Michael Boimoil points out that math is not used by the driver specifically. "There's no counting out change in this business. Most clients have credit cards and accounts." However, he adds that if you also run the business, you will use mathematical skills to keep track of your earnings and expenses.
