Real-Life Decision Making

You are a bike courier who has just cycled across town to deliver a special packet of medical samples to Maple medical laboratories. When you get to the medical building, you walk through the main doors and locate the laboratory office.

Unfortunately, when you try the door handle, you discover that the office has already closed. You look down at the cooler full of medical samples. What should you do now?

"You can slip packages under the door or leave them with other offices. But it all depends on the individual circumstances and what you are delivering," says Joel Metz. He is a bike courier. Obviously the cooler won't fit under the door, but you could leave it with the office next door.

Or you could call the dispatcher for assistance. But remember that you've made three calls to the dispatcher today, asking her what to do in other circumstances. You have been warned not to concern the dispatcher with every single question.

"An experienced messenger will often assess the situation themselves," says Metz.

What do you do?
