Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You call your dispatcher for assistance.

This is the real-life decision that bike courier Joel Metz would make. The dispatcher is initially a bit annoyed that you keep calling, but when she learns that medical samples are involved, she is glad that you checked in.

"The decision you make depends highly on the individual situation and what your experience tells you is best," says Metz.

You know from experience that medical samples can't be left unattended or left in other people's care.

Dispatch calls the medical laboratory and discovers that they have multiple offices, and you are currently at the wrong one. By cycling down the block, you are able to deliver the medical samples to the right lab.

"There are many decisions to be made," adds Metz. "You also have to decide which is the fastest and best route that allows you to make all the pickups and deliveries you need to do within given time constraints."
