Real-Life Math

Marine biologists use math to make estimates of marine life populations. After all, no one can really count all the shellfish or whales or dolphins in the world's oceans.

You are a marine biologist. You are studying shrimp, a crustacean found mainly in cold-water climates. For an upcoming lecture, you need to be able to estimate the population of shrimp. They are found and harvested from almost all of the world's bodies of saltwater.

This is what you know:

  • The density of shrimp in the northern Atlantic Ocean is 5,000 per square mile.
  • The shrimp habitat in the northern Atlantic covers 13,000 square miles.
  • The density of shrimp in the southern Atlantic is 75,000 per square mile.
  • The shrimp habitat in the southern Atlantic includes 16,000 square miles.
  • The density of shrimp in the Pacific Ocean is 18,000 per square mile.
  • The shrimp habitat in the Pacific covers 25,000 square miles.
  • The density of shrimp in the Indian Ocean is 22,250 per square mile.
  • The shrimp habitat in the Indian Ocean covers 11,000 square miles.

How many shrimp are there in all these bodies of water combined?
