Many test pilots come out of the air force. "Generally, you become a pilot, and then after years of experience you're selected for a test pilot training program that lasts one year," says test pilot Russ Stewart. The National Test Pilot School in California is the largest civilian training center for test pilots in the United States.

"Many pilots get their training in the air force, but if you want to be a test pilot in an engineering department, a degree in engineering is recommended," says test pilot Doug Atkins.
