Real-Life Math

"Artists often need to count pennies," say artist Autumn Bobyk. "You need to figure out how you can make money out of selling just one piece of work."

Bobyk managed to make a lot of cash out of selling just one of her creations. The trick was knowing where, when and how to sell the image.

She created an Aztec-like image of warriors for an oil painting, based on pictographs found in her area. Try to figure out how much money she made off of the one piece in her collection.

First, calculate your expenses in making the art -- let's call it Aztec Warriors. We won't include her labor for the time it took to paint it.

Canvas: $85
Printing paper: $90
New paintbrushes: $30
Frame and matting: $180
Paint: $40
Paint thinner (for cleaning): $5
Renting equipment to make prints of the original: $100

Now, calculate how much she had to pay to the art gallery that displayed her painting and handled its sale:

12 percent commission for selling the painting
9 percent for each print sold
7 percent for copyright sold
Original painting sold for: $500
13 prints sold for: $35 each
Copyright sold to another business for its logo for: $1,200
