Additional Information

Requirements vary according to the region and specific job that you would like to perform. In most cases, a bachelor's degree is not required. But an extended apprenticeship is.

Avalanche technician Karl Birkeland says any degree "in the fields of geography, geology, meteorology or civil engineering [is] helpful. It also helps to have as much science as possible."

Doug Abromeit is an avalanche technician in Ketchum, Idaho. "Get a good education," he advises. "Get a job in the industry. Go to the National Avalanche School, and devour as much material as you can find about avalanches and the science of avalanches."
