Real-Life Math

Helicopters are needed for much more than military maneuvers. Take TV, for example. Ever wonder how the news brings you aerial shots of freeway traffic jams or high-speed police chases? Helicopters are handier than planes. They can turn and twist almost at the drop of a hat.

You, the pilot of ABT Television's helicopter, have been given two assignments for the day. You will begin by covering rush-hour traffic above the Gardiner Exit on the expressway. Then you have to dash off to the old Krabtree Apple warehouse deep in the country. Time considerations? You bet!

Check out these numbers:

You must be at the warehouse by 5:15 p.m. for a live broadcast
You must helicopter 90 miles between assignments
You will leave your first assignment at 4:45 p.m.
You will be traveling at an average speed of 180 miles per hour

"We have to deal with everything math-related, from aircraft weight and balance to navigation to fuel measures," says helicopter pilot John Bradbury. "Oftentimes, there are time considerations. In such cases, we must have some sense of math so we can be sharp and punctual."

Will you make it to your second assignment on time? If so, by how much?
