Additional Information

There's no single educational path to a career in grant writing. Most fall into the work by being the best writer on the fund-raising staff at a nonprofit group when a proposal has to be written. Many people working for nonprofits have backgrounds in social work or education.

"I have to collaborate with other universities and school districts when I'm writing grants for projects like getting science funding, after-school programs and stopping violence against women, so that's where an education background comes in," says grant writer Colleen Miron. "You have to know what you're writing about."

In the U.S., the National Grant Writers Association is seeking national certification for grant writers. It has certified over 1,000 grant writers through the training it offers.

Grant writing training is also available in specialized courses offered through fund-raising management programs at universities and colleges.
