Additional Information

High school teachers in the public system must have a bachelor's degree. They also need to complete an approved education program and be licensed. Teachers in private schools are not required to be licensed.

All states require that teachers be certified.

However, requirements to certify vary dramatically from state to state. These requirements might or might not stipulate that a foreign language teacher be required to demonstrate proficiency in the language.

The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) offers a voluntary language proficiency test called the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview. Some state teacher certification boards give credits for the test when issuing certification.

Some states offer alternative licensing programs. A person who is proficient in a foreign language, but who lacks the necessary education courses, could enter the field via one of these licensing programs.
