Additional Information
The only educational requirement to become an insurance adjuster is a high
school diploma or the equivalent. That's according to the Bureau of Labor
Statistics (BLS). However, a college education, experience working in the
insurance field or vocational training beyond the high school diploma is encouraged.
Knowledge of insurance contracts, types of insurance, legal practices
is acquired on the job and through company training courses.
Other skills necessary include oral communication and the ability to work
well with others. It is also important to have up-to-date computer skills
and be good problem-solver, critical thinker and decision-maker.
It also helps to continue learning throughout your career to keep up to
date on changes in the job.
According to the BLS, continuing education is very important. After initial
certification and licensing, many adjusters choose to continue their education
to become senior adjusters, which brings better pay and possibly management
opportunities. However, many of the advanced certifications require a minimum
number of years working as insurance adjusters and passage of certification
exams.
