Insider Info

The American League of Lobbyists (ALL) has more than 500 members. It is unclear precisely how many lobbyists in total there are in the U.S.

Legislative advocate Michael Ross says knowledgeable and experienced lobbyists are always needed. "Part of being a lobbyist is being able to read trends," he says. "If you know what you're doing, you'll always have a job."

Lobbyists like Neil Herring who work for nonprofit organizations generally don't make as much money as those who work for special interests. "It's not financially lucrative," says Herring. "I'm only in this because I want to defeat bad laws, not for the money."

Earnings and employment information from the U.S. Department of Labor is not available for this field at this time.
