Additional Information

A four-year undergraduate program followed by a master of science degree is the minimum requirement. Paleontology is usually available in geology programs and advanced courses may be offered in the undergraduate program. A doctoral degree or PhD is almost always necessary for any serious professional career in paleontology. Many universities offer graduate training in paleontology, at both the master's and PhD levels.

If you're in high school, the best starting point is a college preparatory program with as many science and math courses as possible. Outside reading in paleontology and visiting museums with fossil displays will be helpful.

In college, experts recommend a double major, with full undergraduate training in both biology and geology. If this is not possible, the best solution is to major in one and take lots of courses in the other.
