A bachelor's degree in chemistry is required for this field. Several hundred universities offer programs in general chemistry, which includes high-level math and chemistry courses.

More specific programs specializing in marine chemistry -- which usually include more courses in oceanography -- are offered at about 50 universities around the world. Most technical or analytical positions require a master's degree, and many research positions require a PhD in marine chemistry or a related field.
