Real-Life Communication

Project management sometimes involves organizing a team. Sivan Parameswaran has been involved in materials engineering for about 40 years. He says that communication and teamwork are important skills to the materials engineer.

You are heading up the next project. You have to write a business plan that lets everyone know what they need to do, and what their deadlines are.

"Communication skills are required for any engineer, as problem solving can be done only by mutual cooperation and teamwork," says Parameswaran.

Here's the information on your next project:

Project: develop a cheap lightweight motor oil bottle that you can see through in order to see how full or empty the bottle is.

You have to divide the work between those who work with and understand different lightweight materials, and those who understand the weight and consistency of oil. The two groups will discuss what materials will hold oil safely and inexpensively. This project has to be completed in one month's time.

Develop a project plan outline in point form.
