Real-Life Math -- Solution

The pipes form a triangle, so you refer to the Pythagorean theorem. The theorem states that a relationship exists between the squares of the sides of a right plane triangle.

The sum of the squares of the 2 sides adjacent to the right angle is always exactly equal to the square of the side opposite the right angle, the hypotenuse.

The formula is:

Side C (the hypotenuse) = the square root of the sum of Side A squared and Side B squared

Side A squared = 2 x 2
Side A squared = 4

Side B squared = 2 x 2
Side B squared = 4

The sum of Side A and Side B = 4 + 4
The sum of Side A and Side B = 8

Therefore, the hypotenuse is the square root of 8. Pulling out your calculator, you determine that the square root of 8 is 2.83 feet. The new pipe will be 2.83 feet long.

"When you are installing pipes, you often have to do an offset," says Barbara Zimmerman. She is a journeyman pipefitter. "You have to know something about geometry and trigonometry."
