Most pipefitters and steamfitters learn on the job through an apprenticeship. Some also attend vocational-technical school. Most states and some localities require plumbers to be licensed.

Pipefitters are usually required to complete a five-year apprenticeship program that combines on-the-job training with classroom instruction. To be accepted, applicants must be 18 years old and physically fit. Some apprenticeship programs may require a high school diploma.

Credit may be given for previous military training in plumbing and pipefitting.

Extra Requirements
