Insider Info

Additional Information

Generally, universities offer computing and software engineering programs within their computer science or software engineering departments. Students can take a four- or five-year undergraduate degree. They may choose to complete postgraduate work in the area as well.

"The prerequisites for software engineering are the same as other types of engineering," says Bob Baber. He is a computer science professor.

"But software engineers working in technical applications often couple this with another type of knowledge. For example, a software engineer working in the medical field would have a background in biology."

Extra Requirements

Certification programs are generally offered by product vendors or software firms, which may require professionals who work with their products to be certified. Voluntary certification also is available through various other organizations, such as professional computing societies.
