Insider Info

Additional Information

There are several schools across Canada and the U.S. that offer blacksmithing courses and programs. The Artist-Blacksmith's Association of North America does not recommend one school over another. Instead, it lists a wide variety of schools that offer weekend courses or month-long programs.

Many blacksmiths try to get an apprenticeship, which can be difficult. They tend to take courses and attend conferences and demonstrations whenever they can. Blacksmiths are known for sharing their information -- it's all part of keeping the craft alive.

Lorelei Sims already had an undergraduate degree in the arts before she decided to pursue blacksmithing. She then took a five-month program at John C. Campbell Folk School in North Carolina, where she ended up getting an apprenticeship through a former instructor.
