Additional Information

Continuing education is a must for this career. Although you can find work with a bachelor's degree, future ecologists will probably want a PhD for the best possible job and research opportunities.

Your ecological educational possibilities are nearly endless -- you can choose to get your education in such varied fields as human ecology, marine biology, geophysics and meteorology.

"Specialize in something, but get a broad background in the social and environmental sciences to increase employment opportunities in resource management institutions," says aquatic ecologist Bob Hughes. He says statistics and geographic information systems (GIS) are becoming more important to ecologists.

Fierce competition for grants and research positions may restrict some opportunities. Experience, specialization and continued education are the only ways to make future ecologists more competitive in their particular market.
