Additional Information

For a small cable access station, good basic technical skills and a solid community spirit are all that is needed to start. For anything more, a college diploma in communications, broadcasting or journalism is a good place to start. A degree in a related field such as telecommunications is desirable.

In most university stations, "a BA is a must. Many university-owned stations require a master's degree or PhD," says Andy Marlow, the radio station manager at a university.

At most stations, computers do everything from programming entire blocks of airtime to looking after payroll. So you'll need good computer skills.

"I do a lot of spreadsheets," says radio station manager Jeff Delvaux. "Budgets, payroll, cost analysis. Math is a primary skill but advanced math is not necessary."
