Most people are fascinated by lasers. That's because few people understand how they work. Using the information below, write out a short talk that you might give to a junior science club.

Information

There are three types of lasers:

  • Solid state: high-powered lasers used in the military
  • Semiconductor: used in electronics such as CD players
  • Gas lasers: used in medical equipment

Lasers are beams of highly concentrated light directed through a series of mirrors or gas tubes to their target. Some laser beams are visible 15 miles away.

Laser technology is used in medical surgeries, photography, astronomy, defense, pollution control and fiber optics.

Lasers can be dangerous. But they can be incredibly helpful to mankind if used correctly. They make manufacturing procedures more consistent, with higher quality.

They can help doctors perform surgery on delicate parts of the body, like the eye, with few side effects. And they provide the world with digitized, flawless entertainment such as compact discs.

The military uses lasers to guide bombs to their targets. Scientists are studying hundreds of additional ways to use them. They may attack cancer cells or whiten teeth. The possibilities are almost endless.
