Real-Life Decision Making

Laser technicians are in a unique position to spot trouble with laser technology. For instance, although lasers are used by ophthalmologists to perform eye surgery, those surgeons may not be able to recognize a problem with the laser machine. They rely on you for that.

As a technician, you check all machines at the laser eye clinic where you work on a daily basis. During one of your checks, you notice a minor problem. The problem is in the light-generating component of the laser and probably poses no health or safety threat.

You know the machine is scheduled to be used for eight surgeries during the coming day. Without it, several appointments will have to be rescheduled. Still, you wonder if you should take the machine out of service and repair it immediately.

What do you do?
