Additional Information

To become an animal nutritionist, students can start with a bachelor's degree in agriculture, horticulture, veterinary studies, biology or nutrition.

Some animal science departments offer specialties in animal nutrition. To work in research, management or other areas beyond entry-level positions, a master's or post-doctorate degree in animal nutrition is required.

"A majority of animal nutritionists have advanced degrees, with a minimum of a master's level," says Ronald Lemenager. He is a professor of animal nutrition at Purdue University.
