Additional Information

There are no required training paths for oil well fire specialists. Firefighting experience might be beneficial. But don't expect to go through a fire training program and get a job battling blazes on an oil field, says Sharon McCoy. She is a manager with an oil well control and emergency response company.

"We often get resumes from volunteer firefighters looking for work. But it's not the same. This is a very, very dangerous field," she says.

All the people with McCoy's company started out working on oil rigs. "To prevent a blowout or fight a fire, you have to know the ins and outs of an oil field."

Experts say an engineering degree, preferably focusing on the petroleum industry, would be good for this line of work.

You can also try getting in touch with oil companies and consulting companies to ask questions and even find out where to apply for a job.

There are courses offered by oil companies and consulting companies you can take once you've started working.
