Insider Info

Additional Information

There are currently 50 ACNM-accredited nurse-midwifery education programs in the U.S. That is up from about 20 programs two decades ago.

There are three basic career paths in midwifery, according to the Midwives Alliance of North America, a professional organization representing midwives in the U.S. and Canada.

Certified nurse-midwives (CNMs) are licensed health-care practitioners formally educated in both nursing and midwifery. Certified professional midwives (CPMs) are similar to CNMs, but lack formal education in nursing. They gain their midwifery education through a variety of routes. Direct-entry midwives (DEMs) typically enter the field with extensive experience.
