Real-Life Math

You are a telemarketer working for a communications company. You are working on a fundraising campaign for a nonprofit, environmental organization.

You are able to offer donors different payment options. They can donate a one-time amount. Or, they can donate every month.

You are talking to a man who is a strong supporter of the organization. He wants to continue to support it. He asks to make a monthly donation of $75 for a year. You are about to key in the information when he says, "Wait a minute, how much will that be? I want to give $1,000 total over the year."

Does $75 per month add up to $1,000 over a year?

"Certain donors request to become monthly sustainers for a certain organization. The computers do not do math for us, and math is definitely needed to calculate how much a person is giving in a year if they give X amount of dollars per month," says Sarah Lideen. She is a fundraiser for a communications company in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

What is your response to the donor?
