Additional Information

Apprenticeships are a good way to get started in this career. Watching and learning from a master can take between six months and two years. "Often you'll pay the master saddle maker as well as work for him," says Barbara Kauffman. "It's learning on the job. But there aren't very many people willing to take on apprentices and teach them. It's hard to teach and make a good living as well."

There are, however, a few community colleges that offer a diploma in design and leatherworking. Manual dexterity and mechanical aptitude are important. Being artistic helps, too. The ability to work alone is a needed trait. Business savvy and good customer service are also necessary.
