Additional Information

Artificial intelligence is a science, but those in the field need a broad educational background. Fred Popowich took his undergraduate degree in computer science and his PhD in cognitive science, also studying linguistics, philosophy and psychology.

This broad background helped him understand how knowledge came about and how difficult it can be for a computer to mimic the most simple tasks humans take for granted.

Students entering this field typically follow one of two routes -- a degree in engineering or a degree in computer science. Typically, people who are interested in the hardware side of artificial intelligence, such as robotics, choose engineering. Those more interested in programming study computer science.

Regardless of the route, it's a long academic road before you get to the point of trying to create Data from Star Trek.

For many jobs, you'll require a minimum of a master's degree. Other jobs may even require a doctorate.
