Additional Information

There are no educational requirements for the job, but dockworkers have to belong to a union. Nearly 95 percent of American dockworkers are under union agreement. They get their education on the job, learning how to handle a dockworker's hook, how to use the rope and cable riggings, and how to stow or stack cargo. It may take from six months to a year on the job to get the knack of things.

Job seekers should check with local union officials to find out whether there might be openings. In some ports, unskilled workers may get short-term jobs as extra workers.

Advancement is slow and limited to the range of various jobs on the dock. A thorough knowledge of the different tools and operating equipment can be an advantage. Workers in some positions need clerical or technical skills they can learn in high school or vocational school.
